Climate
The Maldives is very close to the equator where temperatures vary very little throughout the year, ranging between 26.c-31.c (88f) On average there are 8 hours sunshine per day. The weather is determined largely by the monsoons, the southwest monsoon from May-November and the northeast monsoon from December to April.
Currency
The Maldivian currency is the Rufiyaa and Laaree. One Rufiyaa is equivalent to 100 Laarees. The US Dollar is the most commonly used foreign currency. You might want to take some small denomination bills with you.

Payments in the resorts and hotels can be made in the following ways. Cash, travellers' cheques or credit cards. Commonly used credit cards are American Express, Visa, Master Card, Diners Club, JCB and Euro Card.
Electricity
The electric system is 230-240 Volts AC (same as UK).
What to wear
In Maldives the dress is generally casual; light cotton clothing and T-Shirts are ideal.
Please be aware that official regulations do not permit public nudity anywhere in the Maldives, even on the beach at your resort, or swimming / snorkelling around your cruise boat. You should wear a bikini or swimming trunks, at the very least. Most resorts do not allow swimwear inside restaurants, to avoid offending fellow holidaymakers.
Duty Free/Tax/Customs
It is prohibited by law to import alcoholic beverages, pornographic materials and idols of worship. Strict penalties apply to those attempting to import illegal drugs into the country. If you are bringing in a lot of photographic or diving equipment it is advisable to inform your resort of the details prior to your arrival or bring a list with details such as serial numbers of the equipment, to avoid delay at the airport upon arrival. You will be expected to take them back with you. Import duty is payable for any items left behind.

With the up-to-date technology and international satellite links, Maldives is proud of its sophisticated communications system. You have access to IDD facilities on all resorts and when on inhabited islands you can make calls at public phone booths using phone cards. Mobile phones are also available for rent from Dhiraagu (www.dhiraagu.com.mv) You may also like to check with your own mobile telephone provider as discount rates may be available.
Transport/Transfers
Transport within the islands is by local boats known as "dhoni", speedboats, helicopters and seaplanes.
